Art Blakey, one of jazz’s most visionary bandleaders, saw himself as a mentor dedicated to teaching younger musicians. Through the Jazz Messengers, he nurtured talents from Clifford Brown to Wayne Shorter, shaping future jazz legends. While his 1950s bands defined hard bop, his 1980s groups took a more retrospective approach, featuring technically skilled young players interpreting the 1960s style with a modern touch as they searched for their own voices. The previously unreleased Strasbourg 1982 captures a newly reformed lineup after Wynton Marsalis’s departure. His successor, 19-year-old Terence Blanchard, shows remarkable promise, while alto saxophonist Donald Harrison brings energetic intensity. Together, they later became key figures in the Young Lions movement, reviving traditional jazz sounds. Blakey’s band remained influential, balancing tradition and renewal.
