Candice Hoyes, Mimi Jones and Val Jeanty are three musical alchemists from New York City, known as Nite Bjuti. The three artists are kin in their fearlessness of experimenting with sounds. Turntablism, the power of bass rhythms, and lyricism all inspired by Caribbean lineage and community. This album Minwi was borne out of a late-night jam that ended at the midnight hour. 'Minwi' is the Kréyol word for midnight. The soundtrack conjures up the elements that env elop us in the late hours of the night. Mimi, Val and Candice created the music out of reflections that they are looking toward the dawn of love, compassion, building and rebuilding home as a neighborly reality, at a time when many people are asleep and unmoved by greed and the destruction to many of our African American and Brown immigrant communities here in the U.S. and abroad. The trio are three natural mystics creating an otherworldly musical tapestry that transports us into their own dreamland that eases us back and forth through time. With Minwi, they continue their legacy of interweaving the complexities of Caribbean heritage into their avant-garde jazz influenced recordings. The trio's distinctive blend of improvisation gives the listener a sense of journeying back in time with the ancestors, transporting us to a music landscape, whispering and roaring through time with a delicate resilience.
