The gem of the works by Jack London (1876—1916) remains his northern cycle. On the arctic expanses, hearts obey strange laws incomprehensible for those ones who have never been in these far-off lands. The heroes of the writer’s works — Indians who assert their old-established customs, white people — unbidden strangers in search of enrichment, clever and devoted dogs — have to struggle for their subsistence with natural forces as well as with one another. The North becomes the most severe probation of the people’s and animals’ potentialities and only the unconquerable strength of mind and will help them survive in these extreme conditions.
