"Timeless Records occupies a unique space in the European jazz scene. Founded by Wim Wigt and his wife Ria in the 70s, the label’s first release was Cedar Walton’s Eastern Rebellion which, in many ways, served as at the perfect statement of intent rooted in both the bebop tradition but also pushing out in new directions.

From there Wim’s close relations with artists, thanks also to his work as a promoter, manager and booking agent, made him a figure of respect and influence which meant that Timeless was able to attract some of the finest jazz musicians of the 20th century from Art Blakey to Pharoah Sanders via McCoy Tyner, Archie Shepp, Chet Baker, Tommy Flanagan and many more.

As a result, Timeless’ catalogue is impressive both in its breadth and depth containing many gems within it. In 2015 I put together a Japan only CD compilation selecting 10 of my favourite tracks. So I was delighted when Henk - Wim’s son - told me they wanted to release a vinyl version for Record Store Day 2024. In honour of this we have slightly altered the track list and augmented it with two new tracks, including a previously unreleased track from the vaults.

Throughout my years of DJing and radio I have played numerous tracks from the label. In a way the back room is where I grew up and it is the place where you continually need to dig deeper finding those corners of music that will join the dots and create the unexpected connections where the magic lies. Lots of the tracks on this collection are just that thing for me - a mixture of familiar, exciting, deep, and new - and through the years I have turned to them countless times yet each time I pull out one of these records from the bag, it is like hearing that first rush all over again.
