When Diego asked me to write liner notes for his new release, “Underground Roller Coaster”, I was intrigued even before listening to the first note of the album. I’ve known Diego for several years now and have also had the privilege of making spontaneous music with him.
He possesses, on the one hand, a child-like impetuousness, forging ahead relentlessly with a new idea, enjoying the risk at every turn, opting for tension rather than resolution. On the other hand, he’s a musician grounded by a deep, fundamental knowledge of the inner workings of music, able to create intricate compositional frameworks that challenge and inspire the intellect and musicality of his musical colleagues.
For this project he chose his colleagues well. Each is a formidable soloist as well as a skilled accompanist. The compositions contain Diego’s love for rhythmic complexity. Listen to “13 Days”, as well as the Beatles cover, “And I love her”. But Diego also demonstrates his affection for delicate, atmospheric lyricism, as in his composition, “Santa Teresa”. Contrast, playful contradiction, daring moments of walking his particular brand of rhythmic tightrope, improvisational interaction that only a “real” band can achieve….it’s all there for the taking….or in this case, the listening. You might not be able to sit back and relax, but you’ll certainly enjoy the ride.

“Diego is a wonderful musician who is comfortable playing a variety of styles. His knowledge of latin music and his ability to express the fundamentals of that musical language is uncanny.”
Donny McCaslin
“Diego, a young and incredible drummer, show’s in his wonderful compositions the same vision and maturity as his drumming.”
Pernell Saturnino, percussionist of Chick Corea and Paquito D’Rivera
“…Pinera also possess a rare sensibility as a composer that sets him apart from other accomplished young rhythmatists on the kit. … It’s easy to see why the abundantly talented Pinera was chosen for this edition of Germany’s ’Jazzthing Next Generation” series of releases. He’s a star in the making.”
