The Norwegian duo of Espen Eriksen (piano) and Gunnar Halle (trumpet) play extraordinary atmospheric music deep rooted in the land and the soul – warm hearted inside, cool and fresh outside - everything you would expect from master musicians from the far north.The duo was formed in 2007 and has previously released two critically acclaimed records on the Norwegian label Grappa, presenting exciting new and improvisational versions of Norwegian hymns and folk tunes. Through the years they have toured in Norway, Denmark, Spain, Russia, England, Scotland, Island and Greece. On their first record for Unit Records “Sangboka” (“The Songbook”) they present new renditions of traditional songs often referred to as “the Norwegian song treasure”. Until a generation ago these songs were sung by the everyman in all Norwegian homes, in choirs and, not least, in schools. Through bald new arrangements and tasteful use of effect processing and overdubs, the duo has revitalized the tradition and made it relevant for a new and larger audience far beyond Norway's borders.
