First released in June 1994, Amplified Heart is the seventh studio album by Everything But The Girl, the acclaimed UK duo formed in 1982 by Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt. This new deluxe CD reissue expands the album into a 31-track edition, featuring additional B-sides and rare material. Amplified Heart went on to sell over a million and was widely praised upon release for its emotional candour and intimacy. It includes the original version of Missing, later transformed into a global hit by Todd Terry’s iconic house remix in 1995. While the remix dominated dance floors and charts worldwide, the original remains a timeless piece that reflects the album’s distinctive blend of folk-soul warmth and understated electronica. The album’s creation was shaped by difficult circumstances. Much of it was written following Watt’s near-fatal illness in 1992 caused by a rare autoimmune disease. The lyrics—shared between Thorn and Watt—explore themes of love, vulnerability, and isolation with striking honesty. To realise their vision, the duo collaborated with a mix of traditional and electronic musicians, including Danny Thompson, Dave Mattacks, and producer John Coxon, whose subtle electronic textures helped define the album’s atmosphere. Additional contributions came from Richard Thompson and arranger Harry Robinson. In a 2019 reassessment, Pitchfork awarded the album an 8.6 rating, highlighting its lasting influence on artists such as The xx and Beth Orton, and noting that the duo’s “spare, pensive style never sounded more fully realized.” This deluxe edition has been newly mastered by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios. It features a revised tracklist compared to the 2013 edition, including previously unreleased material and live recordings. The original artwork has also been refreshed by John Gilsenan, with photography from Corinne Day and Richard Haughton, alongside full lyrics and credits.
