“Faces” is the title of jazz quartet MAINZ 04’s debut album. Four faces standing behind this album: four distinct characters which are all passionate musicians and saxophonists. And gender-balanced to boot, with alto saxophonist Kerstin Haberecht and baritone saxophonist Steph Winzen, two women who have made places for themselves in the music scene, alongside soprano saxophonist Johannes Lind and tenor saxophonist Alexander Jung. The quartet could be described as interdisciplinary, with its players coming from such diverse directions as jazz, classical, and heavy metal, playing off each other and swapping influences from modern and Latin jazz, funk, rock, and tango, with the result that in their playing, the compositions, and the arrangements, all possibilities are open to them. “Faces” bears witness to this. Over and above the music, they have all been able to explore their complementary strengths, combining these with the love of the saxophone for which their fans have been grateful for almost 20 years.
