“Coltrane”; “Soultrane”; “Lush Life” and “Setting The Pace”.
It’s good to be back in the world of John Coltrane for our fifth journey with the jazz legend. This time we have
travelled further back in time to 1957-58 when Trane was recording for the legendary producer Rudy Van Gelder at
his famed studios in Hackensack, New Jersey. Once again he is joined by a stellar group of musicians led by Red
Garland on piano across all four of the selections. Our previous release featuring these two giants of jazz
(AMSC1379: John Coltrane with The Red Garland Trio & Quartet) has been a phenomenal success for us, so how
could we resist the temptation to pair the two up again? Here we have four, perhaps not quite so heralded albums as
his later recordings on Atlantic and Impulse but just take a look at the guys he’s playing with and it will tell you all you
need to know about how great these early albums are and how great Trane would go on to become. Alongside Red
Garland on piano on all four sessions we have for “Coltrane”, players like Mal Waldron, Sahib Shihab and Paul
Chambers. For “Soultrane”, Chambers again and Art Taylor. For “Lush Life”, Donald Byrd, Paul Chambers (again),
Earl May, Al Heath, Louis Hayes and Art Taylor (again). And finally for “Setting The Pace” (an undiscovered gem?)
we have Red with, again Paul Chambers and Art Taylor. There must have been something in the air in Hackensack,
New Jersey through 1957-58!? As with all AVID releases, we hope you enjoy this classic set and check out our
extensive catalogue for more great music across jazz, blues, folk, country and many other musical genres.
